Spring Spreader

i don't know of one available.....maybe join the HAMB, introduce yourself and ask there??....just a thot.....maybe So-Cal?? on E. McDowell??....Mike

How about taking your parts to a local spring shop and have them put it together. Just a suggestion. I'm one that likes to do it himself but I have a strong respect (fear of) for those springs.
Good luck!
Bruce

Wow Joel, nice work lol. If you don't have it, make it! I usually abide by that rule as well however I just don't have the tools or place to do that. I live in a gated community with a VERY strict homeowners association so I have to take care not to upset the neighbors too much.

And Kube, No, I don't want to be one of those guys that it didn't work for hence post #16 and post #18 stating that I am going to go ahead and buy the right tool. I do appreciate your input however.

A little bit of knowledge can be dangerous. I was clever enough to make a world class spring spreader, using 1" all thread, a coupler, and schedule 80 pipe, and dangerous enough to bend the damn thing when I used it.

That was a few years back and I've got CRS now, but as I recall, I was focused on the position of one shackle that I expected to swing out, but of course it didn't and I ruined my spreader and seriously bruised my ego.

check A to Z rentals at Van Buren and Dysart??....see if they have a porta power and whether you think it will work.....just a thot....Mike

Thanks Mike, that's exactly who I was thinking of when I was looking at renting one, however I did remember their prices are kinda high....on EVERYTHING, but, I got the problem solved, thank you.

Alan, Fortunately you found out that Allthread® has very little lateral strength prior to being hurt. Guys that continue to use this within a spring spreader are asking for trouble.

Kaonix....just saw this posting this morning. Sounds like you may have solved your problem, but if not, I've got a spring spreader you could use. I'm up in Prescott. PM sent.

Old Henry,
Great pics. That's exactly the way I did our rear spring.
Thanks for the pics.

Ok guys, I got my spring spreader but I think it's wrong. Look at the picture. That is the end that is supposed to hold the spring. When I mount it up on the spring still attached to the car, the end covers both the spring and the shackle tabs. That CAN'T be right, unless I'm missing something? Thoughts?

It looks like the end shown should go against - under - the main leaf and against the eye. I'm guessing that a bolt should be placed in the eyes of the bracket attached to the spreader to prevent it from slipping off the spring. I presume the other end of the spreader looks the same and would be similarly placed and a safety bolt installed prior to the spreading operation beginning. Just my thoughts. Hope they help.

Thanks Henry, but perhaps my pic isn't quite as descriptive as needed. There's no place for a bolt. it's simply flat steel. When put in place it covers the shackles as well as the spring and I see no way to get the shackles off when it's in place. Seems too wide, in my opinion it should only cradle the spring eye itself and not the shackle tabs holding the spring in place?

They are relatively easy to make and inexpensive. You don't have to weld feet on the pipe ends, however it does look neater. You can install / use your homemade spring spreader on reverse eye springs! You just bolt an "eye" on the opposite side of the reverse eye. I made mine out of two short pieces of angle iron. Needed to change the 90 degrees to something like a 45 but it worked perfectly! g

I bought a Port-a-power on Craigs List for less than $50. Mine was newer and lightly used. Try out the pump and ram before you pay up and leave.

I have responded to many threads on the "Barn" and EFV8 forum regarding making and using spring spreaders..
Attached is a couple of pix of a spreader that I made about 30 years ago.. I made it from memory of one we had in the Ford Dealership I worked in during the early '50's... The all-tread I used was 3/4" structural grade... I did not make the ends "chisel" shaped, as you will note from the pix, the ends are U shaped to capture the spring eye. It is near impossible for the spring eye to become dislodged from the spreader..
Many years ago we used a bottle jack under the spring eye and a bumper jack to adjust body height.. Kind of spooky, but then... when you have blown the trans and are afoot with only limited resources you do what ya gota do....

Thx blucar. You have cleared it up for me with the first picture. I'm using it incorrectly. Have it turned in the wrong direction. At least according to ur pics I can turn it and it should work correctly so I can get the tabs off.

I would agree with the safe way. Not saying that this is the best way, but the way I did it.
