Spring. Sprang. Sprung.

After using my handy-dandy spring spreader that I built this weekend (Thanks to Larry Seemann for the plans!) I continued to disassemble my front spring. Upon inspection of said spring, I discovered a crack on one of the leaves that ran vertical from the center of the bolt hole to the edge of the spring. My question is- would it be acceptable to weld this small crack or do I need to locate another leaf?

Thanks in advance!

josh,
I found a couple of leaves broken like that in my front spring. I'd get another if I were you. Can a leaf retain it's spring steel quality if welded..I don't think so, mabe someone else will confirm/deny this. But, why take the chance when spring leafs are plentiful.

As Hardtimes said, try to find a good leaf. If it's a short leaf, like one of the top 2 or 3, they don't flex much and you might do fine welding it. I welded the top leaf on my front spring, then jumped on it several times and it wouldn't bend or crack, so I figure it's going to be OK.

Welding does anneal the spring. I would replace the leaf in order to regain the original shape and function. Gar Williams

Heat on the spring will weakn it ,geting another spring would be best. how ever if its just one spring and smashed inbetween the others you could give it a try. probably will crack again becaues the weld hasent gone through the same prosses to be agile enough to take the flexing but im no forging expert. just my 2cents

Well dang! Yeah I figured welding might affect it- just wanted to be sure. The only problem is that it is the Ninth spring from the top. Thanks for all the info guys- ya'll are the best!
