Spring shackle bushing removal

Fellas,

My spring shackles fore and aft are both in rough shape. My question is... do any of you have any useful hints on removing the bushings in both spring and axle assemble? They are always a bugger for me.

I second the hack saw method, I look for the seam and cut 1/3 of the diameter away from it --then that small piece peels out easy with a sharp punch --like a nail set

If you are good with a cutting torch they can be removed very quick ---but you can also cause damage easy

I used to use the hacksaw. Then a buddy told me to use a rivet set and an air hammer. It works great!! I used a 5/16ths tool. A 3/4 might work better on worn bushings since it should still fit the perch bore. They slide right out. It also works to install them much easier than with a hammer and bushing driver. To install them, use a 1/4 inch rivet tool. The main shank fits into the bushing, with the shoulder resting against the bushing.

If you have an old clutch release shaft removed from a bell housing and a friend with a lathe, have him make you a bushing driver tool. it can be used to drive the old shackle bushing out and drive the new one in. Bratton's sells a 14.5 mm drill bit that can be used to ream the new bushing. Most of the time it is not needed, but makes for a good check that the shackle will fit. The tolerrance is not critical.
