Spring Hanger (Shackle) Feedback wanted;

The ones available here in UK seem mostly to be made in India, looking at them closely they would seem to be made of a sort of cast iron . This is a brittle material just wondered about quality control !!! Things could get interesting when a shackle parts company . Just wondered if anyone has had this happen .

John in same weather today roll on that sunny San Diego Big Three Qualcom meet !!! Suffolk County England .

Good grief !!! That sure is food for thought . What happened when it parted company ??? I wonder who would be held responsible, or is it buyer beware.

Not so easy! First I think that they're Forgings, Not castings, Briefly that means they're heated red hot and pounded into the shape in a forming die. And these aren't little 3 ton punch presses. They're more like 50 tons. Ford had a gaggle of these presses because there was much more forging of parts done then. Small shops are rarely setup to do forging today so we see a lot more weldments. Attempts to recreate a formerly forged part by welding the components together. It's OK But......... Nothing approaches a forging for toughness, not exactly hardness, but toughness. For a practical demonstration, take a Name brand open end wrench and file it. The file will cut the steel. The file's "Rockwell" is in the 60s, But the wrench is softer. Now try to bend the wrench and it will fight you. That is the difference between "Toughness" and "hardness". But I believe Ford hardened these parts too. I wrecked a tap on one original from my Town Sedan.

I suppose that if the shackles available now are too soft, you could get them hardened.
