I know nothing about paints, primer or otherwise. However, I've always heard that metallic primers were the best. That's why so many are colored red like or because of the Iron Oxide (rust). But what about the aluminum paint (silver)? That should be a good primer too. And don't forget the zinc-chromate (green) used throughout the aviation industry. It seems like an excelent primer, altough it's not widely available. Exactly what does a primer do? Protect from rusting? Provide a "sticky" surface for the regular paint to stick to? It seems to me that we want rust protection first on these eighty year old "rustbuckets" What exactly is Primer's job?
