Spray Chrome??

OK as usual I am at least a couple of years behind the curve.. Just discovered the spray chrome yesterday.

Curious what the word is on the street,, Good or gimmick?

Good enough for bumpers, or stick with it only for interior stuff.

I have a local source for it so I am excited, but would like to hear from someone that isn't trying to sell it.

Here is Jay Leno's video on it, if you are like me and haven't seen it before.

The process is very much like the one used to make mirrors. It would likely be vulnerable to scratching and deterioration when compared to chrome plating.

The rattle can stuff I bought for the inside of tail lights rubbed off easily after it was dry. Maybe the stuff has improved since I last used it. Rod

Having re-silvered several mirrors, the process is not even close.
The spray chrome process is a 3 step spray on system.
Base coat (for adhesion)
Metal coat ( for chrome look)
Clear top coat (for protection)

Hey, I like it. Might even try it on some interior stuff. No, it can't be near as durable as real chrome but it's not near as expensive.

Best thing to make your tail lights brighter is to paint the inside of the housing with gloss white enamel. Really brightens them up better than Chrome, etc.

Rowdy . I used this on the inside of my lights too recently but put a coat of silver paint on first. It does rub off easily but it is OK if you don't touch it and cover it with the glass once it dries. Certainly made a difference to the brightness.

I would have a lot more use of the paymet Jay Leno received for recomending Spray Chrome, than any amount of Spray Chrome, if i had to use it. Marv

There ya go Marv, I was going to say the same thing about Jay whoring products, it's all about the money. Look around his garage, take that BASF paint booth for example, a gift for him to be seen by the unwashed masses who follow him. Product promotion and nothing more.
The real thing is copper, nickle, chrome. Pricy but hard to beat.

Sure wish it came in rattle cans so us novices that have no air compressor and spray gun could use it. Looks pretty darn cool. Wouldn't mind trying it on some of my non-rechromable pot metal stuff.

It uses the same or similar chemicals but they don't like to tell you what the chemicals are. I'm sure it still uses tin for adheasion and silver nitrate solution with a reducer as the metal coat. They have a special dual spray head to keep the solutions seperate.

Some of these new systems actually are paint systems but the one in Jays video is a silvering process with a clear coat for protection.

Marv,You really think Jay did this for money ?
Deuce Lover i did not actualy mean cash. I was thinking of equipment etc. Just because a person has more money than he can spend, does not mean he does not want more or does not want to save when he can. Marv

chromesolutions.com for those of us who are German-challenged. At least the comments are in English anyway. Site under construction.

Actually, this process has withstood salt trials better than chrome in tests from several sources. There are two competing systems though and there are pro's and con's for each of them.

No rattle can systems yet. The system is not widely dispersed as yet and is not available in many markets yet.
