sport coupe top

The top om my 28 sport coupe is in pieces. it was stored under a carport for 12 years and the weather took its toll. Ishis a job I can do on my own? I have good mechanical and construction skills. Is there a better kit to use? LebaronBonney? Cartouche?

I think it's a job that anyone with good handywork skills can do but you need to find enough information to get the pieces of the puzzle back together correctly. If all the wood is still good or at least repairable it would be time savings. If your wood is marginal or soft then kits are available for that too. I haven't seen a Cartouche top kit, only the Lebaron-Bonney but it comes with every thing a person would need in materials if you have all the old welt tips, drip rail pieces, and all the landau bar parts plus decent instructions are provided. The Model A Restorer series of books volume 5 has a lot of top related information for the Sport Coupes. Some of the earlier volumes have good info on intalling top materials on the other body styles and wood repair information for those pieces that can be salvaged.

This kind of job takes a fair amount of time. If you have time to spare you might as well have at it.

athe wood is in good condition and there is enough of the top there to see how it all went together.

A long time ago (about '74 or '75) I put a new LeBaron Bonney top on my '29 Sport Coupe. The wood was good in the bows, the tack rail, and header. The kit fit nicely and looked good when we were done. The point is, YOU CAN DO IT. Have faith in yourself, take your time - don't get in a hurry. It is helpful if you have another person to help you. One of the tough parts for me was cutting the holes for the Landau Irons. It wasn't physically difficult, it just took courage to cut holes in a new, perfectly good top. :)

I know this is a very old thread, but I wanted to chime in here and let everyone know that Model A Speedster passed away a few weeks ago. He had only been on FordBarn about 3 months, but man he loved this site, and I'm sure shared some knowledge with many people. He was a nice person and will be deeply missed.

sorry to hear that

If you need any detailed photos of the top wood and bracket construction, contact me at bback@usamedia.tv I have a complete roller that I put together and am now going to sell it, but have numerous photos.

I took lots of photos as I removed the top from my 31 sport coupe and will be ordering a kit from Le Baron Bonney soon. y
