Spongy Mechanical Brakes

Tin Cup:

What kind of drums to you have ?

If you are still running original pressed-steel drums? They do flex and could cause a "spongy" feel...

(Just a thought....)

Original Drums, and I assumed the levers would need to be changed. Most previous posts indicated changing the levers on the car would be a beast. Does everyone agree with that ? It sure would seem to be nice if the backing plates did not have to be removed, but I don't want to try something foolish.

IF the angle is correct to line up the brake rod,and IF the rods aren't going to hit the shock,I would keep using it until you have to get in there to do something else.I would not try to change the arms while still mounted, you will bend or destroy the backing plate trying to drive the pins out and the new ones in.Somebody may have bent that rod to clear the shock. That bend is like a spring, when you pull on it the thing will try to straighten out.

I didn't see a single post suggesting that but I may have missed it. The levers have never been off so if if you want to go to the trouble of removing them then you should probably rebush and rebuild everything. As said more than once, swapping the backing plates side to side is the easiest and fastest. Whoever installed the backing plates on the wrong side (and didn't correct it) must have been charging by the job and not by the hour!

Marco isn't it true that switching the backing plates will still result in the offset of the lever pointing away from the backing plate instead of toward the backing plate. I can not visualize any way switching the plates with top becomming bottom, rotating the levers 180 degrees will change the incorrect position on the cam. It seems to me the offset will still point away from the backing plate which is incorrect. I appreciate the time you have taken to assist with my problem.
