Split ring wheel.

Trying to scrounge up parts for my 26 touring. I see wood wheels that say they are for split rims. Is there a difference in wheels? Can non splits be used and vise versa?

Vern, a split ring rim has a removable ring around the outside edge. The T's that used 21" tires had had a cut from side to side across the rim that allowed you to pull part of the rim over the other part and remove a tire because there was no drop center as modern car rims use. I do not have a picture handy, but maybe someone will show one. Earlier clincher tires did not need a drop center because they lock into the sides of the rim on both sides and were slightly larger than the center of the rim for mounting purposes.

Some pictures to assist.

The 'split-rim' Model T wheel uses a demountable rim that needs a tool to remove the tire, by 'splitting' the metal rim. That rim is used on wood spoke wheel that holds 21" dia. tires, normally the tire size is 4.40 x 21, balloon with hard beads, with low pressure 32psi.

The clincher rim demountable is made for 30" tires, where the tire is stretched to go over the rim and the cupped rim locks the soft clincher bead. These tires are normally 3 1/2" x 30" and are high pressure 65psi.

There are a few sets of wheels out there that fit Model T's that do have the ring and use a straight wall tire. They are far and few in between. That's why a photo would be helpful.

Tmodelman, Get your tape measure out. A 30X3 1/2 T tire has a 23 in rim, a 30X3 tire has a 24 in rim. These two sizes were common on the earlier T's.
The 30/3 tire is smaller, but it fits on a larger rim (24") and was used on the front of the car.
The 30/3 1/2 tire is slightly larger and fits a 23" rim and was used on the rear of the T.
The actual tire height on both sizes measured from the tire top to the ground is 30", but that is not the rim size.

Tmodelman stated "a diemountable rim" in the size given. By the way, a 21 inch tire will measure about 30 inches tall also.
