Speedometer

I have a question for anyone. I have a 1930 Model A Tudor Sedan. I just took it out of storage and started driving him around; however something has developed over the winter. Now the speedometer makes a really loud noise the faster I go and the it gets progressively farther off on MPH as I go faster. Does this mean my speedometer is bad and is need of repair or is this something that happens when it has been stored over the winter? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first step is to clean and lube the cable, use stp or 140 gear oil, if that doesnt stop the noise you may have to have the insides cleaned and oiled

I would suspect cable also; I use graphite lock grease to lube mine, but anything that won't just runout the bottom will work.

I'm betting both the cable and speedo need to be cleaned and lubed. Every speedometer I've taken apart had very dried up grease in the bevel gears, and was dry on the inside gears and bushings.

I experienced the same noise a few months back. Lubing the speedometer cable didn't solve the noise problem for me. So I removed the speedometer head and carefully pulled the black case from the front of the speedometer and again very carefully using toothpicks and a lint free cloth wiped all the crud and excess lube off any moving part I could find. Then I used a light weight turbine oil to lube the obvious moving parts, including the main spring pivot points.
Took about an hour and the noise problem was solved. Have driven 200 miles since then and so far so good. Note: Do not excessively oil, only a drop or two.
