speedometer

My 31 speedometer indicates the correct speed as per my GPS, but the mileage does not function as it should. The numbers look new. It appears some replaced the number incorrect. On the 10th, when 0 comes up the number next to it does not turn until the 10th wheel gets to about 3. This happens all the way across to the odeometer. Is there a way to replace the numbers and figure out where the zero's are? I know I can replace them, but do not know how to determine where the zero's are.

To fix this you will have to open up your speedo, remove the odometer wheel assembly, line up the odometer wheels, and apply new decals. I did this to my Waltham speedo, it's not that hard but there are lots of small parts to keep track of. There is a good guide here:

I can post some photos of the process later if you are interested.

Yes, please post pictures. Maybe this will help me determine how to locate the zeros under the old decals.

Thanks. George

When I first rebuilt my speedometer which is the oval type I put the shaft upside down. it change on 7s (I think) all I had to do was flip it over or roll the shaft 180 it works perfect now. Dont know if you round type is the same you might check it though.
