Speedometer Drive

Looking for an answer I can't find anywhere else so far. The old speedo drive gear was very worn, so I replaced it with the correct new piece. Is it "normal" for the speedo drive housing to be shimmed with gaskets to have correct pressure on the gear on the driveshaft?

Snyder's catalog says that is correct, and the reason they package them 3 to a package. (A-17275 $.50 for a pack of 3) I haven't been able to determine just how you figure out how many gaskets to put in, however.

I just did this myself last week. I used 4 gaskets to get to the "sweet spot"... I kinda had to go by feel more than anything. I'm sure that there is a more technical and correct procedure, but it worked for me. Should I ever remove the trans, I will definitely re-do it on the bench to get it perfect.

Normaly you only need one gasket. When installed,I stick a pencil in the drive end & wiggle it back & forth to check for a slight back-lash in the gears. For a driven gear thats worn a bit,Ive installed the hsg with just a bit of silicone & no gasket to get a better mesh.
