Speedometer Drive Gear

Last night I worked on taking apart the speedometer drive gear, so I could change it from a 19 tooth to a 18 tooth gear. Is the retaining end cap always hard to get off ? We tried a thin knife blade to carefully pry the end cap off, but it was tough. Once I got it off, then it came apart with a little more help. Any suggestions ?

Yes you can go from a 19 to an 18 but not a 17 / Most guys drill a small hole in it and partially screw in it and use a puller or a claw hammer to pry out and just silicone the hole back up after replaceing the cap with the hole in it. ken ct

Anyone changing to a 17 tooth driven gear for a 3.54 ratio will find that they need a housing with a deeper mounting surface so that the smaller 17 tooth gear will mesh with the drive gear.

Jamie, once you get the end cap off, how do you get the shaft and gear apart?
I'm baffled, like the oil filler tube!
