Speedometer Cable Routing and Hold downs

Well Awwrightee, I got the gumption to remove the Speedometer Cable.

Yep just held in place with Zip Ties except at the Firewall where the cable slid into the exhaust pipe of the 302.

I'd like to run the cable as close to stock as possible, does anyone with a '54, '55, '56 have a good view of theirs?

Currently the Cable was run from Trans to the Top side of Frame drivers side, and then run along the outer face side (with the zip ties) and metal brake line. Brought along the top of the frame to the firewall.

I hope the Trans internal gear is ok, the cable became welded inside the sheath and froze. Inspecting the cable on the Trans side it appears to have unwound a bit from square and the white 18 tooth gear just spun on the end.

82" cable 18 tooth sprocket

There may not be an internal gear. The C-4 trans did not use an internal gear, the out put shaft had the splines machined into it. A check with your finger can determine what you have (or better yet one of those cameras with the lens on a wire).

What side of the trans does the cable go in - driver or passenger side.

Paul Is a C4 different from an AOD? Internally at the rear housing of Trans?

The cable attaches on Drivers side.

I’ll take the car into the ARC Shop after the new parts come in and will let you know what I find.
Thanks!

The way that failed, I’d bet the internal gear is fine. If it’s reading right, I’d replace the white gear just in case it’s damaged internally. Paul’s idea of a camera is great. Stuff we didn’t used to have cheap.

I can’t get under my bird right now, but I don’t recall a lot of supports for the cable. I’d say you just need something to tie it away from the exhaust, at least if it was working until it melted.

Never have worked on an AOD so I do not know the differences

May this year be outstanding as opposed to the last...Happy new Year!

What a pleasant surprise. did a bit of research yesterday about the issues with my speedometer.
The C4 Transmission is the predecessor to the AOD and then along came the AODE, Cable vs Electronic Shifting.
The internal gear in the rear housing is actually cut into the Main Shaft so when my cable froze, it was no contest for the plastic gear off the Speedometer cable. There is a mar on the plastic gear.
The surprise? The AOD just might be a truck one from the looks of the pan. Gives just a bit more strength and reliability.
The wrong gear was installed on the cable end, it was for the standard trans, perhaps why the Needle would jump once in a while? The proper gear has a longer top shaft on it, perhaps the shorter shaft was not engaging its' hold down inside the tail column.

Boy oh boy am I confused now and will need to crawl once more under the car and look things over. Is the bell housing bolted to trans or one piece? Are there electrical connections? Are there lumps on the lower body by the pan??

My pan may signify an AODE or 4R70W, ---- an AOD pan is FLAT.

There are no electrical connections to my Trans that I've seen. It IS a 4 speed automatic, HAS a TV Cable, downshifts when the accelerator is depressed and when I slow down, the trans starts to downshift automatically. There is a solenoid- NSS and Back-up Light switch, it must be an AOD. I have put over 5k miles on car since bought so the TV cable is correctly adj. and operating. (hmmm for all my poor mechanic skills, work and money put into Frank, I should drive it more often!!)

I read the pans are NOT interchangeable AOD vs AODE 4R70W

Pic of my pan below.

Just what is going on here?

It's just a larger pan that's all...perhaps an AOD out of a 4X4.

Regardless, with the nice cooler up front and the extra fluid should do nicely here in the desert!

Parts coming soon and it'll be back on the road.

The new Speedometer gear came today, note the longer shaft on the new gear. This is the correct one for the AOD Automatic, the short shaft is for the standard gear box.
This gear rides on the main shaft of the transmission which has the mating gear cut into it.

My Speedometer would jump occasionally.. I'm thinking the short shaft was not fully into it's corresponding hole inside the tail shaft??

Kultulz there are about 2 references to the speedometer cable in both books, SM and the Body Manual.

It reads about removing the HEAD and the other a diagram portraying the inside of the firewall showing the cable up against the wall behind the dash, that’s it.

Have some nice rubber/ plastic coated clamps and will find the best route.
