Speedometer cable end at ******

Hello,

My speedometer quite working. It appears that the end that fits into the transmission is not tight on the speedo cable. I crimped it a bit with pliers and it worked for a while, quit again and now is working again. My question is how is that end of the cable attached to the cable and what can I safely do to make sure the end stays attached to the cable. Thanks.

Crimped ends is common but square ends can be formed with special equipment. The crimpers normally used for square and key type ends are generally pretty heavy duty swaging type tools. If it's reproduction then it would be hard to say how it was originally crimped or swaged on. There are a lot of different reproductions out there since say 1940 or so. Speedometer shops made their own inner cores so they just reused the outer flexible conduit.

A universal speedo cable that is cut to length and a end crimped on comes with a piece of metal like in the picture,it is clamped down in a vice then discarded—- perhaps you could copy it —- you didn’t say which car of yours has the problem , I suspect it’s the earlier car with the round keyed end,the later cars has square ends at both ends — on that one the universal inner cable would work and the crimped on end of the universal would be at the speedometer
