Speedometer Bounce

Well, today modelacarman and I took apart my speedometer again. I found a You Tube by Jack Bahm that told me exactly what I needed to do. We followed the instructions and the speedometer works like it's brand new !! The main shaft was the problem and now that it's cleaned and lubricated we're in business. I've had this car for over twenty years and the speedo has never been this good. Thanks everyone for your help and encouragement.

Marty,
Isn't it a great feeling when you do it yourself?
Great job getting after it and doing it. We do it our selfers are getting to be fewer and fewer. I'm going to try my hand at an engine rebuild this winter.

I have fires to the North of me In the Mount Shasta area and South West of me in Lake county. Nothing close this year, but fire season isn't over. I'm about an hour and a half south of Oregon right where the The valley ends and the mountains begin.

I'm glad you got it done at home though, next time you won't hesitate to tear into something. I mean, it was already broken right?

Marty, you must be a pretty good mechanic. It's not easy pulling that main shaft out without screwing something up. Congratulations. Jack

Jack,
We followed the you tube and I made the "tool" that he suggested. It was a piece of wood with a 2 inch hole in the middle (I cut it with a hole saw) but instead of pressing the shaft out with a vice, we carefully tapped it out with a small hammer. We cleaned out the tube and the shaft and used a light lubricant on it then reassembled the whole unit. I'm not really a good mechanic (but thanks for the compliment) but my friend modelacarman is. We just do what we can.

Tiny,
In our Model group (the "A" Team) our favorite saying is "If it ain't broke, fix it till it is broke." Seems to work for us.

I have had problems with the cable in the past and found that tightening the end at the drive shaft made the cable bind. Before you go to the trouble of taking things apart, remove the nut on the cable, verify that the flex cable turns easily in the outer cable housing and then put the nut back on the drive gear only a couple of turns. It is possible that the flex cable is slightly too long and its binding in the outer housing cable. With some heavy grease on the threads of the nut at the housing it will not come apart. Ed
