speedo repair question

The speedometer in my 28 Phaeton locked up and broke the speedo cable. With a new cable the speedo will not turn by hand so I assume the unit needs to be disassembled and repaired. I am newbie and have zero experience with speedometers so I am very hesitant to try to repair it myself for fear of ruining it and having to buy a rebuilt one. Any suggestions/recomendations as to who can repair it? I see Snyder's has a rebuilt unit for around $225 but I hope I can have mine repaired for considerably less.
Thanks.

There are at least half a dozen homemade tools to take apart a speedo. I have made the spanner wrench described in the 14 page article. Try ebay. You can get a rebuilt one for $115, no core.

Search for the numerous threads that have discussed speedometer repair. It is rather easy to fix the problem that you have. Gar Williams

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try to loosen it myself this weekend before I consider sending it off for repair.
