Speedo needle bounces!

What would make the speedometer bounce once a vehicle gets to around 30+ mph? More specifically, an original '34 truck speedo fed from an original 3 speed transmission. The needle goes from 20 to 40 on the gauge at a constant rate of speed.

often happens in cold weather after people have used grease on the cable, not sure that is what you are dealing with but graphite lubricant works well for me

Usually it just needs the speedo cable lubed. Take it off at the speedo head and pull the cable out of the housing, smear white lube grease on it and slide it back in. That should fix it fine.

It might be worth replacing the inner cable completely. Take it out, have someone hold one end & see if you can twist it from the other end. It there is movement, replace it. And as others have said, lube it if it's dry.

Had the same problem on my 34 pickup even with newcable & housing, I had to dismantle the speedometer head & remove old caked on grease & lube it, it fixed the problem. It only takes a small chunk of dried up grease to create the problem so clean it well. Hope this helps.
Gary.

The cable may be frayed or the speedo head needs lube. I like 3N1 oil for this. Theres a brass cap you have to remove/replace to oil it.
