Speedo Cable Routing

I took my old speedometer cable out of my car about three years ago. Now it is time to install a new one, but I can't remember the routing.

Does the cable travel along the frame rail into the engine bay and then come back in through the firewall somewhere? Or does the cable follow the frame rail to the inside of the cab and come up through the floorboards somewhere? Seems like a dumb question, but I just don't remember and don't seem to have pictures of that little detail.

Thanks,
Jim

Yes. There is a hole in the firewall passenger side mid-height that has a bump out and is angled downwards. That’s for the choke rod. The hole for the speedo cable is about 2” outboard and 1/2” below that choke rod hole, just below where the firewall curves from vertical to about 45 degrees downward.

See photo attached, pardon the "well used" firewall.

Tip: It will be much easier to hook up the cable to the speedometer before you attach it to the speedometer drive housing (transmission) or install the two cable clamps (inside firewall and frame).

Way back when I was told that the cable should be attached to the upper rail of the frame, furthest from the muffler, to help protect the cable from excessive heat.
