Speedo Cable on Early28

I just had a speedo re-built and I am having some difficulties getting it to work correctly. This is an E28 with an oval speedometer. Speed or distance didn't work, so I replaced the cable about 6mos ago - the speed worked but miles didn't. When the speed finally gave out I had it re-built.

I didn't replace the 6mos old cable and what I am finding is that it works for short distances and then drops right to -0- and stays there steady. No speed, no distance. The rebuilder is willing to re-check it and has been very responsive and helpful. I have read and tried many of the suggestions in the FB posts - but can't seem to get it.

I have am sure the square head and key are set into their respective housings. I have tried loosening the ends, tightening the ends and there are no apparent kinks in the outer cable. I removed the entire inner cable, inspected it, lubed it and re-inserted it - That got it working for 15 miles - then stopped. The inner cable showed no signs of damage or twisting / kinking. Typically what happens is the speedo will start to bounce and drop right to -0- and stay there.

I have attached a drill to the end of the cable and run it in reverse from the gear side OK - but only for a short "distance".

I have inserted the extra spacer that is provided by Brattons in the drive gear.

One one of the post on FB does reference the early style speedo gear and cap assembly, which is what I have - pic below. It has the drilled screws with holes for safety wire and 10-37 on the cap.

I have a new cable on order - but I am not convinced that is the issue. It seems like one of the ends is popping out - could this be because of the earlier style gear and cap?

My next try will be the washers that are recommended on post #15 here. Anyone with updated experience with this?

I would pull the gear and housing off the driveshaft tube and check the mesh of the gears. I have the same 10-37 housing on my 28, but don't have any spacer, and mine works fine

Thanks Tom. Are you using original cable or replacement? I pulled the gear off and added the washers - a few miles OK - but not in the clear yet. Below is a pic of the housing and gear - seems clean to me.
