speedo cable install...Q

I'm just now reinstalling my speedo cable to torque tube. Two Qs....
Is the cable routed THRU the hole in the ctr cross member OR is it routed UNDER the cross member. And, how much bending will this cable tolerate when routing, understanding that a straight cable would have less stress than a bent cable ?

NOTE:
Hmm, should have mentioned year: 1930...

It goes throu No. 2 cross member at passagers side hole in cross member. If you look in a parts bood they sell a rubber gromet that goes around the cable and in the hole of the crossmember.

THANKS for that info !
Hmm, that would be a LARGE rubber gromet,eh:) !

gunmetal,

I'm not saying your wrong, but the 28-29's that I've worked on/owned went
under. There should be a bolt *hole on the upper lip of the frame, about middle
of the door on the passenger side. Then the cable drops down to the speedo
unit.

* The hole is for the loop clamp for the cable, for support.

It sounds like somebody is selling cables that are way too long. An original cable cannot reach either the center cross member or the muffler while it is connected.

D.J,M is right. On my SW sedan the previous owner had a cable assy that was too short so he ran it up thru the junction box!

here is a picture of the cable mount on a 30 chassis i am dissasembling.hope this helps.

Ok, if that picture depicts the routing of the cable accurately (factory for '30.....then that's what I needed to know. Marco or anyone else, does that look the way ford routed it ?

BTW..as can be seen in the pic provided...the cable WILL go thru that ctr cross member hole and still connect. It keeps it off of the muffler...BUT has a bend that is not necessary if routed under as pictured; ergo my question.

The picture is correct. The clamp will be tight enough to keep the cable off the muffler. I have a picture that shows the same thing. I will try and find it.

The cable runs as pictured in #9, and not through the hole in the crossmember. My 28 has the original cable and I'm sure it would not even be long enough to go through the hole in the crossmember. Clamp it as in #9 and it will miss the muffler.

No doubt, I am missing the frame clamp. Minus 24C (-12F) earlier this week so it is time to turn on the milk house heater and take a look.

This is correct as is Tom's pic. Note the cable is somewhat snug between the frame clamp and drive gear. There is no way it would reach through the cross member unless you remove the clamp at the frame. Similarly, it cannot possible touch the muffler.

Thanks !
Well , now I can do it right. But, just checked and there is NO HOLE in the frame in the area indicated in the pic ? Guess I'll drill one and install the cable correctly.
Wonder if it's unusual for that hole to be missing?

It routes through a hole in the firewall with a rubber grommet, near the choke rod hole. Then passes through a clip holding it to the inside of the firewall then up through the channel under the gas tank.

Gunmetal(post #2),
I'm think you are referring to the AA speedo cables which are 85" long and go through the crossmembers. The cars are routed differently and are only 61-1/2" long.
