A few years ago, I bought a 29 Phaeton (nearly scrap) and since then my hair went grey because of all the trouble making it a nice one again. It was from somewhere South America I guess, because it was a right hand driver. Was, because someone has begun to make a left hand driver out of it. I bought it as an project and after a few years I`m on the home strech now with some more struggling. I live in Germany, so this is not an easy undertaking with all the lack of knowledge and professionals here for those automobiles. I am very grateful for the opportunity to receive help through this forum!
Today I tried to put the speedo cable back again. To do it right, I looked at my sources like The Ford Barn and found out, that it has to go from the speedo gauge inside the tunnel - through the firewall near the choke rod on the right side of the car. Then underneath the wooden floorboard and end inside the speedo housing on the right side of the torque tube.
That`s my problem! On my Phaeton, the outlet of the speedo housing (marked 9/37) shows to the left side of the car, toward the battery, not to the right side! I unscrewed the speedo housing and noticed, that someone has marked the direction with a white marker arrow on the torque tube (to the left side). I looked at the parts and noticed, that the speedo housing will fit either way, to left and right. The only difference then is the rotation direction of the cable.
Now I`m uncertain:
could it be right in some cases / for some regions, that the outlet is on the other side (left) than normal (right)? No guesses here, please.
If I screw the housing not the way the marked arrow will show, but to the right side, will it harm the speedometer or will it run backwards (speed/distance)?
