Sparton horn problem

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with a Sparton horn ?.The motor turns over too slow and isn't very loud anymore. Thanks,Ben

The last one I worked on like that I just turned the adjustment screw out until it made no noise, then held some fine sandpaper against the commutator while someone held the horn button down to spin the motor. After a few seconds the motor started speeding up and after about 30 seconds it was blowing like a new horn.

Also oil the two felts for the armature shaft.

I've had some success by squirting a little WD-40 on the commutator. Also as Tom pointed out a little oil on both ends of the shaft can't hurt either. Your results may vary?

I've been to shows and asked the same question. Only I asked it to the wrong guy. He was one of those guy's that wanted the best sounding horn and told me to use a wire brush to clean in between the grooves of the commutator. What ever you do don't do that. If there is a build up of junk there use a tooth pick, never use any kind of wire brush, it will short it out for sure.

Yes, to the toothpick!

After sanding the commutator, I use electrical contact cleaner (avoiding the armature windings) to assure no sand particles or dirt is left behind.
