Sparton Horn Orientation?

The horn on the left (on the orange paper) is a 1928 Sparton flat screen horn, and it looks just like the other horns I've worked on over the years. The Sparton name is on the bottom and the cap alignment tab is on the right at 3 o'clock. When mounted on the headlight bar, the terminal clips will be horizontal.

The horn on the right (on the green paper) has a convex screen and has the rear cover alignment tab down next to the bottom screw hole, and the Sparton name is on the left at the 9 o'clock position. Notice the 6 screw holes and note that the horn can't be mounted with the terminal clips horizontal. This is the first time I've seen this strange orientation of the 6 screw holes. Does anyone know what's up with that? Thanks

It looks to me like a non 'A' horn motor that's been re-worked to made into an "A" horn motor. The terminal clips and bolt appear to be new and the coils appear to be re wound. Spaton made a lot of motor horns some of which used the same frame and armature as the 'A' horns.

Yes, I rewound the field coils and haven't soldered the wire ends yet. Vince has verified what Don has said, that the horn on the right is a 1932. Now, I'll have to see if the customer has the correct 1932 rear cover.

BTW, notice the felt washer around the adjustment screw on the left. I often see these felt washers missing on horns. I haven't looked to see if they are sold, but they are easy to make if your's is missing.

A Model A cover will fit the 32 horn, the orientation or placement of the adjustment screw will be in a different location than an A and the wire conduit will come in from the side rather than the bottom, but it will cover the rear of the horn OK.

As many of you probably know A&L manufactures and supplies many A parts to the major suppliers. They are currently the manufacturer of the Sparton Horn, so if anyone would know, they would. They are really great to deal with (as with most A'ers). I am sure a quick phone call would do the trick.
