Spartan Horn Trouble

1st I will say that I went back thru some old threads to try and find my answer. But, no luck. Having horn trouble on my new M A PU. Took the back cover off. Playing with the adjustment screw and trurning by hand, I can get the horn to "chirp ". Even tried to put jumper wires on it several different ways, but still no luck. May not be jumping it correct. Is there a video or web site with suggestions on repairing the horn?No matter how much I back off the screw, it does not turn either by jumping or pushing the horn button.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are there TWO wires coming from the horn?
If so, run one to the hot lead of a good 6 volt battery and one to the ground terminal.

This should, with the adjustment screw backed off, make the motor spin.
THEN, comes step two through eight to make it sound right.

IF NO SPINNING occurs, first clean the armature sith "Electric Motor Cleaner" or WD40, and try again. Don't use any metal tools or aluminum oxide "Sandpaper" on the armature.
Also, make sure the "Brushes" are in place and making contact.

Hi Drscott,
With the jumpers attached can you spin the armature by hand to get it to run? On mine one of the winding connections hit one of the brush holders. The adjusting screw may be backed off too much allowing the armature to locate too far aft. Try tightening it up little by little. Also, if you open the diaphram you can clean and oil the ratchet mechanism that makes that wonderful sound. First get it run then worry about adjusting for sound.

You have two contacts on the bottom of the horn motor area. Attach a hot wire to one and a ground wire to the other. That should turn the armature.

Hope this helps.

Both brushes on your motor should be insulated from the motor frame. Sometimes someone messes with the brush mounting screws and leaves out the thin black insulating washer under the screw head.

Thanks so much for the picture and illustration. I will take mine off and give it a good cleaning per your instructions. It’s fun being back in the Model scene again. This is my 1st pickup and it’s been about 15 years since I’ve had one. Like I said, I can turn it with my fingers and while playing with the adjustment screw, I can get it to “ chirp” . But, it will not turn while I use a jumper wire or of course just hitting the horn button.

Again, thanks for your help.

Update....Got it working. Just was so gumed up and dirty, just had to work it loose I guess. Sounds a littler sick, but I will now follow everyone suggestions as for cleaning. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Also make sure the connection between the horn rod at the end of the column and the light switch is clean .
Sometimes grease can leak out of the steering column and fill up the switch and affect the conection . The parts houses sell a Do dad to eliminate the problem.

Thanks, good idea. Having a blast so far with it. Have not driven it one mile since I bought it. Kind of ugly weather here in KY right now. Again, thanks so much for all the help. It is greatly appreciated.
