Unfortunately not so on my 7 tooth. :( I had to put a slight bend in the rod to obtain the proper throw at the distributor. :(

Mitch beat me to it. I was going to ask the same thing because my 28 with 7 tooth steering and original motor mounts clears the head with the rod straight.

What is the position of the arm on the steering gear ? It should point straight up when fully retarded; if the hole in the rod has been drilled in the wrong position the arm will be off set ?

The most important part of the spark rod is at the distributor; be sure you are getting the full 20 degrees advance and retard; it is sometimes necessary to bend the end of the arm on the steering column to obtain full travel; this is covered in the Service Bulletins

DON'T put adjustable couplers on the rods, just something else to FALL OFF!!!
Cut them to the proper length & re-weld them, IT'S EASY!! & CHEEP.

My 'straight' rod would clear the head just fine. I put the bend in so that I could obtain full advance/retard at the distributor.

I probably should straighten it back out and bend it at the column because the current bend is right oven the edge of the head. If I let it clear the head, it's too close to #3 plug strap, so I let it rest on the head instead.
