Spark Advance

Does anyone still get "clicks" when advancing the spark advance on the steering column?
No clicks here just worn down too low

I don't, but when I restore the steering column I'll use a chisel to make the grooves deeper as well as install new levers, and grease the moving parts. Then it'll click like it should.

Are you talking about the notches on the plates the spark and gas rods ride on? If so, it depends how worn they are. Some are worn flat and/or the retainer springs at the base of the shaft are weak. If worn the answer is no.

Mine was worn smooth when I bought it. After taking it to Bentley's for a steering box rebuild and other work it came back with clicks restored on both sides. It's nice to work with someone who know's what he's doing and is willing to do it.

Once you define the groves it will click just fine. I have all the cars where you can get the click. It helps when setting the timing.

Just use a triangular file and deepen the grroves. The springs on the lower end of the spark and throttle rods will pull the tabs on the back of the handles (If they are still there) into the grooves and you'll get have the "clicks" again!

I regrooved mine with a hacksaw blade, put a small bead of weld on the contact part of the rods andgroung the weld to a small peak. Works like new.

Like Bob, I used a triangle file to deepen the grooves and bent the grooved ears up slightly. I also sharpened the "blade" of the lever with a Dremel type tool.

Could a person (after taking the spark rod out) just bend the lever a little so that the lever would ride a little closer to the grooves? Don't take this as a good "fix". I have not done this but thought it might work.

I always use a 3 cornered file to deepen the plate groves, but the essential part is to remove both control rods and build up the worn underside and grind or file round. The end result will bring tears to your eyes. Just like new, and ready for another 80 years use. Click, click, click.

Most i work on I tap the flange up with a hammer . This tightens up agaist the lever, Works evey time for me
