Good for startup, Just don't leave it at late timing, it will tend to overheat the engine.

Bruce, I made one of those up. I was still curious sp I made up a pointer, and tried to put my timing light on the thing. One with the correction dial on it. I must be doing something wrong.

When we were looking for an A to purchase (last Fall), one of the candidates had a VW distributor. Someone had modified the upper plate from an original distributor to use the advance arm as a "dead head". IIRC, it was a washer under a head bolt with the knob sticking up. The Advance rod was dead-headed on it, so it looked pretty good for the casual observer. The advance lever was thus locked in place.

LOL. The sales guy had never noticed until I pointed it out...but he also didn't recognize the distributor wasn't original....
