Spare tire location

The spare tire on my '29 Roadster pickup is mounted on the drivers side front fender. I'm noticing that many have it on the passenger side. How was it decided when manufacturing trucks which side the spare tire was mounted to?
Thanks

Just a theory but Model T's used a right hand only door. The Model A typically uses an inside locking drivers door and key lock passenger door. It suggest that exiting a vehicle was done on the passenger side, out of traffic and on the sidewalk not in the mud and mud puddles of the typical roads of the time.
Is this why the gear shifter can be moved sideways too?
