Spare Key for Pop-Out Switch

I have only one key for the pop-out ignition switch on my '29 Fordor. As far as I can tell, this switch is original to the car.

I did some searching on the forum here and the internet, but was not successful finding a source for having a spare key made.

Does anyone have a source I could contact?

Thanks,

Thanks Ray, I should have thought of A & L. I have been very pleased with there products and service.

Anybody else have sources? Has anyone tried a local key-smith?

The key blank used for model A is also the same that is used for many locking gas caps from the aftermarket ---avn't bought any new key blanks for a while, the blamk "B1" has a round head, the blank "B2" has a hex head, try your local store

I'm no expert, but having lost my ONLY KEY, I learned the following:

If you have an original pop out, it will have a key number printed on the lock cylinder such as A1234 etc. The key codes for these locks are available and a good locksmith should be able to make one.

If you have a repro (many original pop outs were replaced) it depends on which one. There was a repro made in Spain, and if that is what you have it will say made in Spain on the back of the pop out. Key blanks are hard to find for the Spanish repro.

There was a US made repro widely used in the 1950's to 1970's. There were 9 key combos for this pop out, and the number 1 through 9 will be stamped on the face of the lock. Key blanks for this US repro are available if you search around.

The best person to contact for all of this is Dick Crabtree who is the Model A pop out guru. Search this forum for his contact particulars.

Good luck,

Hi Ron,

Per reply #5, just in case you decide to follow Mr. Smurph's advice to call & speak to Mr. Dick Crabtree, your search will be over on finding specific information for your particular lock & key.

Besides, you will have a new, true friend.

We have hundreds of original keys, nut need to know what # is on your switch.

Dick is sure an expert on popouts and a nice friend.

Everyone - Thank you for all the information. I will take a closer look at the key and pop-out to see what it has for numbers, etc.

Then decide what direction I need to go.

Again, thanks a lot; and I hope the above info is helpful to others looking for a key.

How about a picture of the key you have left, and the popout.

Otherwise this thread will end without us knowing if it is indeed an original popout :-)

Joop - Good request; I will try to get said picture or info within the next day or two.

I am currently getting all the parts and car in one building so I can start re-assembly.

Well, this shows you how much I know; there are no numbers on the key or the pop-out.

I have come to the conclusion it is not an original.

I guess I will keep my eyes and ears open for a good original.

Does anyone have a recommendation for any of the pop-outs being made today? (Just in case I don't have any luck finding a good used one.)

Joop - I am sorry I disappointed you. The car and I are currently not in the same local, and I could have sworn there were numbers on both the key and pop-out. So much for my memory.

When I looked at it this morning and came to the conclusion it is not an original (I honestly don't know who made it; no identifying marks of any kind); any pictures would be worthless. Besides, I forgot the digital camera.
