Some 37 Ford questions

I just purchased a 37 five-window coupe and have a couple of questions:

1. Where should the spare tire be stored in the trunk? I read in the instruction book that the spare is stored behind the front seat (in the trunk) in the three passenger car. There isn't any indication that it is attached with a holddown bracket in the coupe.

2. I filled the tank with gasoline and the gas gauge is now stuck on the "empty" mark. Could the tank float be stuck? Can I get to it from the access plate in the trunk? If so, what can I do to fix it? Has anyone out there had that problem?

3. I live in a state with two license plates. Where can I find a front license holder bracket?

4. What oil is recommended for a 24 stud V-8 engine? (I don't know the year, but is later than the 21-stud 37)

5. Is there an early V-8 group for the 37?

Thanking you in advance..........

You can access the gas sender unit from that plate in the trunk. Momentarily ground the wire from the sender, and check to see if the gauge moves. There are 2 locations for the spare wheel, the early production cars had the spare standing behind the seat, others had the spare lying flat in the trunk with a wooden shelf on top of it. The front license plate holder is the same for 37-39' and perhaps later?

Thanks for the answers. Charlie, I have purchased the 37 Ford book from Early V-8.

Fordscript: How do you ground the wire? I am not very knowledgable of electronics. How do I know which place the spare goes? I don't see any place to attach the holddown bracket if I put it under the shelf. Is there a holddown device if it is behind the seat? Do you know where I can purchase a front license plate holder?

Again..............thanks!!

Hold out for an original license plate bracket (unless it is the last thing you need to get the car on the road). They shouldn't be that hard to find. Let me know if you need a picture of what to look for.

Disconnect the wire from the sending unit, and briefly touch it to a clean metal surface. Have someone watch the gas gauge, this will determine if the wire and gauge on the dash is functional. Do not let the gauge go above 3/4. Prolonged contact will burn out the gauge! The spare in the trunk is held down by a 'bent, threaded bolt, attached to the floor. I am not sure of the attachment arrangement for the spare mounted behind the seat, as I have only ever seen one of these cars.

Meter the wire that attaches to the gas tank sending unit. You should be able to get some electrical value if the meter is set for 6V. The unit should be easy to pull if the tank is in good shape. I believe some of them did have cork floats. The metal version is available from most venders. My 37's have the front license plate bracket because TN was a two plate state. You should be able t find an original in states like TN that had the double plate law.
