socket size for lower crank pulley 40-41

Barn folks can anyone advise me on the size socket that goes over the crank slot and onto the hex nut on a 59ab 40 or 41 V8 lower fan pulley.
Thanks in advance

If a hand crank type I have a couple that are 1-1/8". Don't take this as gospel, I think some might be a bit bigger (not sure). If a plain bolt, 15/16" ought to do it.

Mart.

A little tip. When I assemable those early engines I cut those ratchet teeth off. There a pain in the butt, how many use a hand crank anymore. Walt

Thanks gents, the one on the crank in the 40 PU is 1 3/8 and the one on the parts car is recessed , I had a 1 1/8 but was split on two sides. I curious if the crank thread on both are the same. I appreciate your time and replies.

On the later Flatties you can use a Pontiac crank bolt and washer.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. These are much easier to find (in our area) than the OEM Fords?

1 3/8 size is the crank ratchet nut use on the engines through 1938 with short crank, all '39-53 uses would normally be the 1 1/8. Deep and fairly thin socket is needed on the '39-48 types with deep recess pulleys. Most sockets have fairly shallow 12 point section and so only partially engage the hex because of interference with the crank fingers in the round section of the socket, but so far for me this shallow engagement has been sufficient. A socket with a deep hex would be great, but so far I haven't found one.
Pretty sure the '49-53 bolt is 7/8 head. It should work on all the earlier motors if crank isn't needed...you can always call AAA for a dead battery, like a soccer mom...

Hi Bruce, working on 3 Flatties here at the moment, 1 has the bolt with the "crank-tangs", measures 1.125" the other 2 measure 1.062".

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The Pontiac bolts are 1.062", same as the later Flatties!

Thanks everyone, yes BL the thin wall is great but the time to repair it may be a waste. Or maybe the Army/Navy surplus has some, remember those places, they are still around here. Off topic if anyone knows, a pal offered me a 59af ? he said a truck motor from Canada ? great motor for $300 is the F motor special, thicker cylinder walls ? Thanks again gents
