I ran my gas tank dry and for the first time I added more than a couple gallons at a time, due to working on the motor. Well after reading on line some where, that 28/29 capacity is 10 gallons and 30/31 is 11. I get my big funnel out and dumped in 6 gallons. After I pulled out the funnel I was shocked to see it was about a half inch from running over my new paint..

I had looked in my tank after I ran out of gas and it was bone dry, so what is the capacity of a 31? Mine is 6 gallons.

Hate to say this again, but it was bone dry, not only did I look with a flash light but also opened the sediment bowl (nothing) after I put in the 6 gallons I opened the sediment bowl to check for sediment and it ran free and clear.

Thanks Don, maybe I should check again, I just put on the cap after I dumped in the 6 gallons, could it take time? small opening?

Are you measuring USA Gallons or the Brittisch gallons ? There is some differnce between them.

I wonder if it was April 1, 1931 when the tank was made??? Maybe some of the guys at Ford were playing a joke??? "April Fool's"

Really, interesting IrishHills. Remove all the gas and redo the test.

A 1931 tank should hold about 11 USA gallons>

I'm seeing some solder on the inside far right bottom of tank, wondering if the one chamber was soldered shut for some reason? and like I said the rest of the tank (that I can see) is clean and shinny including the shut off hookup.

BTW, how would they get in there to solder that up? nothing on outside of tank.

The assembly of the Model A Ford gastank, 28-31, was done in steps. All "inside" parts were soldered and or rivited to the outside shell before the assembly of the top and bottom took place.

Go to my website and read all about it.

PLUS...Brent has some excelent photos showing the inside of the tanks themselves.
