Snyder head install questions

Hi guys, I just picked up a slightly used snyder head and was wondering what you guys do before you install one. New studs? What gasket is the best for this head? If the head isn't flat and I have it surfaced, will this become problematic with the pistons? It is the 5.5 head. Thanks.

I just installed one yesterday. Per Sammy Guthrie's recommendation I used a A-06051-g graphite gasket (GraphTite) sprayed with Castle CopperHead sealant. Make sure both head and deck are super clean. I have new studs. Rolled edge of compression ring up.

Im pretty sure its grade 8 studs. You might wanna give them a call in the morning to check. But what ever they recomend is what you want. Ive never seen it happen, but supposedly the Higher Compression heads will pull the studs out, or break them or sumthing like that. But while you have the head off its a good idea to replace them anyways. because old ones have a tendency to be warped after all the heat, cool, cycles. So puttin a new head on, can get pretty tricky. Good luck.

Also, if you have to get the head resurfaced, it shouldnt be a problem with the pistons, or causing comp knock. As long as your block hasnt been decked to many times...

Use a B gasket it will give you .075 and the recess in the head will give you over .100 so if your pistons are up a little the will not have a clearance problem. with a straight edge and some feeler gauges you can measure your block and head and see what you have.

I would make sure you get your head surfaced and use grade 8 studs, Bert's will have all of the parts in stock that you need.

These also need to be torqued to a higher setting than a stock head.....check with Snyders to be sure....I think that is part of the reason to use the Grade 8 studs.

Dont b head gaskets have 2 extra holes for water jackets? (that's what I call them) so would it still seal right?

There was a post here or on ahooga y/day about closing off the extra holes w/pictures, maybe by tom w. Scroll down

grade 8 on new head bolts . most all vendors offer them . call snyder .. steve

I don't want to modify a a head gasket, there has to be one out there that is the correct one that requires no modifying.

For high compression heads use the "B" gasket. It's the "B" block that has to have the holes plugged when using an "A" head - not the gasket. Gasket needs no modifications.

On both my engines, with Snyder 5.5 heads, I used the Snyder Premium head gasket ; you don't have to use any other sealant; have over 1300 miles with no leaks or weeps. Re-torqued the head as Snyder recommends. Instructions come with each head gasket.

The statement below is from Snyder's online catalog regarding which head gasket to use with their 5.5 to 1 HC head. They suggest the B-6051-M

Tired of coolant weaping around the head! This unique gasket has a solid steel core sandwiched by heavy-duty high density gasket material coated with silicone. Additional high temperature silicone bands surround all water passages. Install with no additional sealants! The model 1928-31 model A version is recommended for use with all stock heads. The 1932-34 model B version is recommended with all 1932-34 stock heads as well as 1928-31 5.5:1 Snyder brand high compression heads.Neither of these gaskets will work with the Brumfield brand high compression head.
Part Number Specifics Price
A-6051-M 'A' version 1928-31 $27.95 / ea.
B-6051-M 'B' version 1932-34 $25.95 / ea.
