Smoking while running

Hello all. I got my new ride home today. 29 model A sport coupe. So I took it for a quick spin when I got home and noticed it smokes while driving its k it coming out from the exhaust pipe. The old owner told me about this and mentioned that new rings or seals would fix it. Any ideas? My wife's grandpa who has a 29 model a as well said that he thinks it's possible the choke stuck making the engine run super rich, therefore makeing it blow smoke while on. Problem with the choke it isn't even connected, I'm missing the piece that connects the rod from your dash board to the little piece in the carb. It is broken, like I mentioned, but maybe it's stuck with the choke on or even partially on... I'll screw around with the choke tomorrow making sure it's off and see what happens. I'm really hoping its that easy. I really want to do some maintenance on the motor, but was hoping not in the first week of owning it! I want to drive this thing all over town for a bit before I start working on it! But has anyone out there has this problem? I'm sure tins have. And how did you fix it!!? Thabks in advance!

Are you getting any oil coming up the oil fill tube?
What color is the smoke?

Blue gray - oil
White gray - collant
Black gray - fuel (rich)

I would change the oil, fix the choke, and drive it until you use up the old gas and put in some new gas, then see how the exhaust looks. You could also drain the old gas and use it for cleaning parts.

You may just have a rich running carb issue, even if the choke plate is fully open. Pull the plugs and post pics, this will show you how they are burning and what may be the cause.

Blue gray smoke usually indicates engine burning oil.
Black smoke usually indicates engine running rich. The black is the unburned carbon. Check your choke. Check the float level.

I had a vehicle that burned a lot of oil which left a lot of un burned oil in the muffler chamber. After rebuilding the engine it would smoke after driving and getting the muffler hot... Remedy was to replace the muffler assy

After choke is fixed the next thing to check is whether the GAV is open more than 1/4 turn off the seat.

Awesome, I really appreciate all the help. I'll try to check some of those items today even though I won't have much time because of Easter and all.. I'll let you know what checking the choke reveals. Thanks and happy Easter!

If it all fails remember smoke coming off a vehicle not running is far worse than the other way around. Just kidding! It does sound like too rich. Best of luck!

You could try some ATF, 2 stoke oil, or Marvel Mystery oil in the gas, it might help loosen up a stuck ring, or just make her smoke worse ;)
