Smitty's muffler?

How do the Smittys mufflers sound on an A. I am getting a Stromberg with a burns intake and looking at getting a header as well. If I do get a header I will be doing the exhaust and was looking at the smittys mufflers. How do they sound in comparison to the original A muffler?

I am of the opinion that few people know what an original engine using an original muffler truly sounds like. I am also of the opinion that a header & Stromberg won't change the sound of a totally stock engine to any noticable amount. It takes higher compression and more radical camshaft profiles to do that.

BTW, wouldn't this whole topic be better served on H.A.M.B. forum where Ryan asked all questions other than restoration topics be discussed?

I dont care if its spot on sounding to an original A I was just wondering if it would be close. Im not a complete purist about my A I just have fun with it.

I have no idea, but I can tell you this: I have a 31 roadster with a 'hill climber' cam, a police "B" head, and a 94 downdraft carb. I have a stock Aries muffler and no headers. People tell me my car doesn't even sound like a Model A. I believe it's true, but it sure does run good. :-)

Mt S/W has a new Cast Iron Header. the muffler (Oneof the cheap ones) that has been gutted as in no baffles, and the tail pipe is 1 7/8" dia. (original tailpipe is 1 5/8 inch). Engine has Snyder 6.1 and B or Touring cam. She still has that same Model A rhythm but definaltlly does not sound like an original Model A.

i have a scaled dog manifold with a 97 & a reds header . using a porter muffler . no way it sounds like an "A" ! maybe a 8n/9n ! LOL its got a nice loud tone to it ! .. steve

Thanks for the info, thought about an aries but im not sure yet. I like the longtube header over the cast iron header so im leaning toward a different muffler, but nothing to crazy.

smittys are just an ordinary glass pack muffler any more, they dont sound any where like the old 50 and 60 smittys, go to kragens and buy a cheap cherry bomb muffler, will sound just like the new smitty

I have a Speedway glasspack that bolts directly to the collector on Red's header. It does NOT sound like a model A.

I have a 48 Ford coupe with CHevy drive line and Smittys from Florida,I like the sound but it seems mellower than back in the 50's.My model a has Standard muffler and it clickety clacks like an A should.
