Slow Speed Cam Question

Question for T'ers...

I was adjusting my slow speed screw which rubs on the cam, so when I pull back on the hand brake I can get some more clearance between neutral and activating the back brakes. While I was tightening the screw I noticed the post, the slow speed shaft (Mac's catalog #T3402D) was popping back and forth about 1/8" in and out of the hogshead. I looked into the ****** and saw that this post is attached to the clutch spring compressor C-shaped part (not sure of name) and inside of that is a bolt which is also moving back and forth.

It doesn't seem right to be moving to and fro, but I have never had an issue with this part in the past. Can someone offer their 2-cents worth on this movement?

Thanks,
Jim from IL

The clevis on the parking brake cross shaft adjust the rear parking brakes. The screw puts the clutch in neutral. To adjust the parking brakes you need to have both rear wheels jacked up with the front wheels blocked so the car dose not roll. Put the lever straight up. Now spin the wheels, if the spin freely you are in a good place to start. Now pull the lever back 2 clicks, the brakes should just be starting to rub, if not you need to shorten the rod up bu turning the clevis. If they both feel about the same, pull the lever back 2 to 3 clicks. the brakes should lock up at this point, if not return the lever back the 4 to 5 click to straight up and turn the clevis. Pull the lever back 4 to5 clicks. If the brakes lock the wheels you can tighten the lock nuts and put the cotter pins back in.

3402-D is the clutch lever and shaft, it can move in and out as it is not locked in except by the clutch release forks (3406-B) and 3400 trans clutch release ring.

The bolt you are describing sounds like some one has used a bolt instead of riveted pin in the clutch release fork. If that is the case, you might try one of two things if you do not want to pull the hogs head, take out the bolt and replace it with a rolled pin or get a slightly larger bolt (maybe metric). If you use a rolled pin, run a safety wire through it, if you use a bolt use locking nut and drill the end for a safety wire.

Back to the parking brake lever, when it is straight up it should be adjusted to just put the car in neutral.
