Why am I having a hard time putting slip yoke into my 4 speed manual trans? It goes is easy for about an inch and a half then hits hard..it will go in farther if I force it by hammer but I don't want to do that...what is the problem??

Has this yoke been in this trans' before ? If not, it is possible that the prior install of either was not of an adequate length for proper support and the splines are damaged/distorted.

try another yoke, if it goes all the way end with out any problem then you know your yoke is bad, if the new yoke does the same thing then the trans shaft has a problem

Have you replaced the tailshaft bushing? Sometimes the aftermarket ones don't work as well as one from Ford. I ran into this problem with my toploader.

Yup ...had the same problem...had ****** overhauled and did not send the yoke to the rebuilder and so he put the bushing in the tail shaft that he thought was correct but it did not fit my yoke...when I called him he knew right away what the problem was....wrong size bushing....J in CT

if it goes in any at all its not the bushing, the splines are damaged either in the yoke or on the trans output shaft , use a flash lite and look down into the yoke to see if you can see any kind of distortion like twisted splines, same on the out put shaft

I saw one yoke with grease inside. I dug out what I could get, and drilled a small hole in the plug at the end to let out air and extra grease when I pushed it in.

We were rebuilding an open drive 3 speed trans once and we always test the output shaft splines with a slip yoke that we know is good....on this one the yoke would only go on about 3/4" and started to get very tight. It wasnt even close to sliding in all the way. We always clean the splines very well before installing the output shaft so we were puzzled. Ended up pulling it all apart to look for the problem. To look down the length of the splines you couldn't see a problem but it turned out that the mainshaft was was slightly twisted! Replaced the shaft and no problem. We learned to test EVERY output shaft with our test slip yoke before installing it (or selling it to a parts order).
