My search for donor replacement metal has led me to a 39 mercury convertible sedan. Are the bodies on the 39 ford convertible sedan and the 39 mercury convertible sedan similar? I'm interested in the sheet metal, not trim trim and running gear.

Way different.
I doubt whether any panels would interchange between a 39 ford convertible sedan and a 40 mercury Convertible sedan..
With a 39 deluxe ford coupe and a 39 Mercury coupe the only 2 parts that are common to both are the headlights and rear window glass.
Sounds like you may have a 40 mercury convertible sedan with 39 mercury front clip.

Honestly, I don't believe Mercury offered a CONVERTIBLE SEDAN in '39. Word has it that Merc DID offer one ONLY in 1940, which of course......Ford did not in '40! Here's a '40 Merc CS!

Remember, the Merc wheelbase is 4" longer than a Ford of that era. DD

1939 Ford: Convertible Coupe; Convertible Sedan
1939 Merc: Convertible

1940 Ford: Convertible
1940 Merc: Convertible Sedan

Sounds like you bought the car in IL?

Nope. I'm in the research stage, I will take a look at it in a couple weeks. That car in IL will take a heck of alot of work to put back together. Since it is not assembled there is no telling what would be missing. I've been searching for 39 CS wrecks or parts vehicles to see if one can be made of two. The IL car apparently has no floors and serious rust around the windshield frame and around the rear deck lid. I did find what was advertised as a 39 Merc CS that is also in horrible shape. Thus my question. Based on V8coupeman's comment, I don't have a match yet.

The front floors and rear deck area can be repaired with replacement panels that are readily available. The windshield area and rear floors can be an expensive problem.
Buying a donor sedan might be the way to go.

Mercury only offered a Convertible Sedan in 1940. To my knowledge, not much, if anything, is interchangeable between the '39 Ford Convertible Sedan and the '40 Mercury Convertible Sedan.

Not only is the wheelbase longer the Merc body is about 4 inches wider than the Ford body.

We have a 40 Merc Convertible Sedan, there were NO 39 Merc's built (well one prototype). As mentioned above, you will need to find a donor Merc fordor sedan and cut and piece in the pieces you need. Good luck!!!
