Silly question about pop out ignition switch

I finally got around to replacing my aftermarket ignition switch and armored cable with the correct 'pop out' style and, um, is it supposed to actually do anything special? I was expecting some sort of dramatic popping action but it just goes on and off like a regular switch.

Did I install it incorrectly or does 'pop out' refer to how it works internally? Thanks!

Where did you buy it? If it's a Snyders ($50+) It won't pop out. It just sits there and looks good! They seem to be well made and will last a long time.

Are you pushing it in after removing the key? It won't move in on its own. But when you put the key in the switch and turn it to the "On" position, the cylinder should pop out.
If it doesn't move in either circumstance, it's most likely broken, frozen or it's not a true pop out, as "Chuck Sea/Tac" suggests. Nu-Rex makes a non-pop out switch head that looks all the world like a real pop out - but it doesn't "pop". :) I'm not sure if this look-alike switch also is available connected to an armored cable. 'Gotta check the parts catalogs to find out.

I did buy it from Snyder's actually. I was under the impression that it would pop like an original. That's a bit disappointing.

Is there anywhere to get a reproduction switch that works like the original?

If it looks like this it's an after market non popout.

That's the deal, it is the Nu-Rex switch. I didn't read between the lines of the description in Snyder's catalog. Maybe I'll start hunting for the correct one now - it sounds like a really neat part.

Edit: By the way you guys are super fast with the responses. Thanks so much!

I second Bob C 's recommendation of Dick Crabtree. He has done 3 for me. He told me he has restored over 1000 popouts in his career. He also does excellent work restoring door handles. His phone number is: 281-615-2261.

Thanks I've had that car for quite a while. Predates the Model A to my garage but not in production!

And I'll give Dick C. a ring this week. Sounds like he's the popout guru. Thanks again everyone, you are all a fantastic resource. Cheers!

There is a reproduction switch that looks like an original but does not actually pop. This is the one you have.

The original allows you to start the car and remove the key as the engine keeps running. You then push in on the switch to turn the engine off. When you go to start it, the twisting of the key will cause the center of the switch to "pop out".
