Sidemounted Spares ?????

How the heck do you get the sidemounted spares out of the fender well? Am I missing somthing here or do I have to deflate the tires to do it -Karl

My understanding is: If they are Firestones then yes you have to deflate them somewhat. There may be other brands as well that are bigger than original, but originally it wasn't necessary to deflate. Or, in other words, the current Firestones and maybe some others are bigger than Firestones and other original tires were.

Karl I have dual side mounts on my Coupe, Firestones and both need to be somewhat deflated to remove, kind of works backwards does'nt it. On the other hand on my Slant I have the same size opening filled with Good Years and they do not need to be deflated, just a difference in the Brand.:o

True about the Firestones being bigger. I have to deflate then a little to get them out of the Town Sedan but not the Roadster. Both 30's.
It helps to remove the lug bolts out of the plate before removing the tire. I made them easy to remove by punching them out and filing some of the stock off the flats. That way they can be pushed out of the way with the nuts removed. It helps to clear the wheel hub a little.

I also had a set of old Ward's Riverside tires that I had to deflate to get them in.

I have dual mounts on my 30 coupe with Lester tires. Here's the procedure I use to get them in and out.

First of all I have hub caps that pop out. I form the tabs with the tool that I purchased from Mikes several years ago. It works great. Here's the procedure:

Pop off the hub cap
Loosen the 15/16" nut on the mounting bracket.
Pull the wheel up as high as it will go.
Tighten the 15/16" nut.
Remove the lug nuts and the wheel should come out easily.
If it doesn't get underneath and loosen the nut (I think it is also 15/16")
holding the mounting bracket to the frame and swing the wheel assembly to gthe rear,

Hope this works for you.

MAG has the solution that I recommend. Make the studs removeable and, with them out, the tire will come out of the well without deflating. Why carry a spare if you have to deflate it when you really need it? Gar Williams

How about deflating them when you put them in so they don't stress the fender and carrying a tire pump to inflate them when you need to use them? With modern tires and roads combined with the low mileage we put on most Model A's that could be never. That is how I handled the problem when I was running 16 inch Kelseys.
