Side cover selector shaft seals

I need to replace the selector shaft seals on my 1951 Mercury ******. I have read that the retaining pins will need to be drilled out in order to get the shifter arms off. Does anyone have experience doing this? What are the retaining pins replaced with? A split pin? Nut and bolt? Thanks in advance.

I recently made this repair on a 1940 side loader. Van Pelt Sales has the pins. I just carefully drilled out the old. Used a bit slightly undersized then drove the pin out. Then I put the new pin in and hammered the end so it would mushroom and not come out. It's an easy repair.

Same thing I did last. If a person can find some soft iron rivets it might work better than the universal clevis pins I got from Mac VP although they peened over OK. The soft iron rivets expand better but they are harder to source.

A person can use a screw or small bolt but it has to be a very close tolerance fit or the arms will start wobbling on there too soon. Rivets expand and fit more tightly so this doesn't happen near as easy.
