Sickening screech

My 1930 Tudor has developed a sickening screeching sound.

It happens at random (although getting more frequent) while driving at highway speeds.

It sounds like metal-on-metal and lasts about two seconds -- not enough time for methodical diagnosis.

When it happens it sounds like it is coming from the clutch or transmission area, but it could be originating elsewhere -- can't swear to anything.

Had the EXACT 100% problem...and i mean EXACTLY...turned out to be the shaft of the Water pump had way too much play and was going..that sound reverberates to the engine and back to the ******..Changed the water pump and never ever have heard it again....Try it and check the WP play amount back and forth..I bet that is what it is!!:D

Could be any of the problems mentioned above and could easily be the speedo cable or clutch thrust. In my case it was a repro camshaft thrust plunger. Tried lubricating with graphite oil, but still the same. Found a good original with a good 'X' pattern on the bottom, replaced the plunger and used a new repro spring and the noise disappeared immediately and has never returned. A friend of mine had exactly the same problem with repro plunger.
