Sick of trying thermostats

Third attempt at installing stats in my 42 Flathead. Just bought and tried NAPA 115 stats and cant get them to open in near boiling water. 180 degree my butt. Have and used infrared thermo. and this pissing me off. Had similar trouble with three different manu. Open fine using a heat gun so not jammed but don't think they are designed to open at 260 degrees. May go back to no stats again. Not supposed to be this difficult!!
Sorry for venting just really annoyed.

I've had no issues with NORS Robert Shaw made "barrel-type" stats or new Stant Super Stats. I got the new Stants from Rock Auto for something like $4.00 a piece. I'll try to get a part number.

They drop right into the water neck of iron or aluminum heads.

They should start to open at 180. A few months ago, I installed Carquest part # 13848 from Advance Auto. They are probably the same as your NAPA ones. They opened a few degrees apart from each other in the pot of heated water, but they work well.

I looked up you last thread on running hot and cold. How are you securing the thermostats inside the hose?

Years ago I used to get mine for the 59AB from Flathead Jack. He always made out to be a big secret where he got them? Tim it would be nice to get a current number available on line.

We used to have problems with new thermostats not opening at work. We started testing every one of them before we installed them. The boss's coffee gup was right next to the breakroom microwave, so we used his cup and an infrared thermometer to test the thermostats.

I’ve tested every t-stat I used for years now. If it doesn’t open at the right temp, I take it back and ask for another. I was told a long time ago by my radiator shop that if I had a used one that worked, put it back in. Yes its definitely a huge PITA.......Mark

Fourth time must be a charm. Tested and they work fine. Drilled 1/8 hole for air bleed and secured them with stainless steel wire. Temps ran up to 190 after short cruise. Thanks for indulging me

Gary and others:

Here is the Stant part number (45848) and pictures of thermostat. They are 180 degree units. I got the part # from member @flatjack here on the Barn.

I ordered them from Rock Auto and they were very cheap.

I just looked at Rockauto and they don't list them anymore. Here is another link to them.

Other part # interchanges:

Good that you did this. I think this is important. This type of thermostats will easily change position in the hose if not positively located and will block the flow whether they work or not.

How about a picture how you secured the stat with stainless wire for us novices. I never did that in the past. Thanks

Just remembered, prior to that.
One side ran 30 deg cooler than the other , because stat was kicked sideways in the hose
