shutting off a model a

steamgas

i had an older gentelman friend of mine to ask me how i shut of the model a.well i was a little suprized by the question.my question is should the gas shut off valve be shut off and let the motor draw all the gas from the carbuaror before shuting off the ignition?what is the logict behind this?

If you shut off the gas and allow the engine to run you use up the gas in the carb and this avoids any leaks. A way to keep the gas smell down in the garage!

if you have a properly functioning carburetor float valve and fuel shutoff you will not have any fuel leakage after shutoff if you dont run dry.

Like Mitch says,if things are right it won't leak. What it will do however,is let the gas in the carb evaporate through the vent hole in the back of the carb. The rate of evaporation is so small I would never worry about it.You will get a gas small when you walk by the car, minor, but it bothers some people. When I park in the garage or shed I just shut the gas off.If I park them in the cellar I let them run dry.The noses of two cars wind up right near the washing machine, and standing in front of it you can get the faint smell unless I run them dry.On hot days you can see vapors coming out from around the gas cap if I leave cars in the shed. This alcohol is evaporating pretty fast too.

I shut off the fuel coming up the drive and I make a habit of pushing the spark lever all the way up before I get out. If one of the boys jump in it I don't have to remind them to retard it so it won't kick back against the starter. Just a couple of my many quirks.

anything that makes you feel safer is good . my car sits 10' from a gas water heater , so i to worry about fumes . my car doesnt leak but i am aware of the water heater .. steve

Another reason to shut the gas off and let the carb run low or dry is, on a hot day the carb can boil from heat soak at shut down, especially with the crap gas being sold these days.

Safety first always,. When i am going to be parked in the garage for a long period, i shut the gas off and drain the carb, just safe to do with these older cars.

Doesn't the crap gas also leave a residual in the carb if you leave it for a long time between runs??

Sure it can, depends on how long you are talking about letting it sit, I think if you are questioning that at all you should always drain the carb.
