Showing a little progress

I used a lot of Kirker paint on Mack trucks when I had the body shop. I got mine from the Mack dealership by the case. I found Kirker to be the easiest paint to work with and never had a problem with dust or bugs getting in it. It is near miraculous how Kirker almost sprays itself.

Your paint work looks good. Is that Kirker on the body? If so what color?

Kirker on the fenders and PPG Concepts on the body. Kirker only comes in standard colors none of which are Model A except black. I'm finding the Kirker shot easier than the PPG.

I bought a gallon of Restoration Shop rock moss green due to 1/3 the price of PPG.

Shot some color today:

Truly nice!

like the others, my compliments on your progress. in retrospect, i wish i had had the foresight to make a wheeled support system for my body as you have ... would have saved a lot of personal grief and embarrassment as the neighbor kids ran away covering their ears!!

i am really enjoying the satisfaction of 'doing it myself' ...

mrtexas and Charles, there is a before and after thread someone started a while back, when finished your vehicles would make a wounderful addition.

I may be getting the hang of this color painting. This is my second coat. I didn't use a guide coat. On the first color coat I found a few spots to work on. I then shot those spots with 2k hi build and block sanded them.

I could have used a contrasting color of 2k for guide coat as I have both buff and black but it didn't occur to me until after the first color coat! Live and learn.

I had my best luck with orange peel shooting only one coat and waiting until the next day for the 2nd coat. I had good luck with the single stage PPG Concepts using the 4:2:1 ratio of paint/thinner/activator.

My Kirker black paint didn't specify how much thinner (rather a viscosity I couldn't measure) but it worked great with the same 4:2:1 ratio.

My Restoration Shop paint Rock Moss Green specified 4:1:1 but I used the same 4:2:1 and it shot good as well.

It's probably obvious to an experienced painter but I didn't realize that enough thinner is what helps eliminate the orange peel. And I quit trying to use up the leftover paint in the gun by fogging on a quick second coat.

I sure like my new Owata LPH 440 gun for easy spraying with little to no overspray. It is a very low pressure gun at 16psi. I'm using a Sears 220v no-oil compressor with two pistons and about a 40 gallon horizontal tank that puts out about 14cfm that a friend gave me. The no-oil compressor is also good in that I don't get any oil to the gun or my breathing air mask. It keeps up just fine with the Owata at 10cfm and my Pur Air 2000 breathing system. I use one hose from the compressor to my belt and then a short hose to the gun and another short one to the mask.I can't use my Pur Air 2000 with my SATA NR2000 as it uses 15cfm or my SATA KH primer gun. I hung up the NR2000 and use an organic vapor respirator for the KH.

I bought the Owata gun new when I realized my compressor wouldn't keep up with the NR2000 and Pur Air 2000 at the same time. I noodled around various forums and found lots of good press on the Owata gun. Cost about $450 on ebay.

On to a second coat for the tailgate, driver's door, and one hood section for my 28 RPU Rock Moss Green.

I actually made the cart for my 63 Corvette convertible using some plans. I have it being painted by a pro shop. When I get it back I'll take the body off and replace the frame with a show quality 65 frame I got from a guy for an unbelievable $4,000 fully equipped with rear end and brakes. I'm also going to drop in a 5sp overdrive transmission at the same time.
