Shorting Horn.......

Good Evening Everyone:

I am working on a 1950 Ford with a horn problem.

When you turn the steering wheel the horn sounds without touching the horn ring.
So we have figured out it a short in the wire from the horn ring to the horn relay.

So the question is how do you replace/repair the wire from the horn ring to the horn relay.

Thanks in advance.

My specialty is more on the Mercury cars of that era but I think the Ford cars still had the single ground wire running all the way down the inside of the steering shaft and out the front side of the steering gear box assembly. You will have to pull the horn ring off and check the grounding collar and wire where it attaches. You may have to pull the old wire out and replace it if the insulation is peeling off. It should just have a bullet connector on the gear box end of the wire that can be disconnected and pulled back up through if necessary.

Thank you for the information.

Now how do you pull off the horn ring?

I normally work on Model A Fords which has no horn ring.

Thanks in advance!

Mine is a '49, but the horn is the same.
These guys are right about the wire and the horn ring removal.
Disconnect your battery so you don't piss off the neighbors, push down hard and turn to the left. The ring (or button) will come off with a wire screwed to it. Disconnect the wire and cut the end off and pull it out from underneath at the steering wheel shaft. It will have a bare wire somewhere. You can thread a new wire through the hole and re-attach the ends or get a new NOS one for a parts house and push the bullet end down through the shaft.
I've had to do a lot of these, sometimes it's easier to push a light guage baleing wire down first and then use it for a pull string to attach to your new wire. Good luck...slim

The rubber donut under the horn ring may be deformed and hardened. You can purshase a new one at various supplies of old ford parts.

Thank you to all who responded to my intermittent horn problem.

When I did as advised and removed the horn ring I found the wire to the horn ring was broken at the connection.

I manufactured a new wire from the horn ring through the steering tube exit at the bottom and wired it to the horn relay.

The only problem left is the "rubber ring" under the horn ring was made of sponge rubber and collopased when I installed the horn ring so I had to temporly run some paper towel under the ring sponge rubber to build up the ring and install the horn ring until I can get a new horn ring rubber, but the horn works.

Again thanks to all for the help!!!!

It's been 59 years since I did this on my'40 Merc but, before you pull the old wire out at the bottom, splice a temporary or new replacement wire to it at the wheel end then pull the whole works through at the bottom. Leave enough surplus wire at the top until you get ready to cut it to the proper length for the ring/button end. Worked for me and saves the fishing expedition.
