Shortening a driveshaft (again...)

I'm putting a '48 rear into a '32. I've got the torque tube shortened and now I have to shorten a '34 driveshaft (with a 10 to 6 coupler) to fit. I assembled a seal and bearing into the tube, inserted the driveshaft and then put in the thrust washer, speedo gear, and snap ring. With the speedo gear centered in the opening for the igloo, there's about 3/16" that it can slide back before it hits the thrust washer. Is that too much play? Is it a problem if the speedo gear can slide forward a bit? (By the way, what's the groove in the back end of the speedo gear for?) Thanks!!

Just a little side note: In order to work while driving forward, the speedometer
turtle (igloo...) MUST be installed so that the threaded snout for the cable connection faces counter-clockwise when the torque tube is viewed from the
rear. This is important on a 32 because the cable was originally oriented toward the RH side of the vehicle, and therefore the turtle was mounted downward on the RH side, with the snout facing upward and to the right. Leaving the turtle either on top or downward on the LH side will require that the cable go to the LH side up to under the dash. Therefore, it is good to take care of this when shortening a later tube for use in a 32 IF you would like the cable where it (originally) belongs...
