Short gas control rod too long

I am putting my 28 coupe together now and tried to install the short gas control rod. It appears it is about 1/4" to long. Part or all the problem is probably the top part of the steering column. I had to replace the part that has the seriations where the gas and spark handles slide on. I tried to get it lined up well, but it might be off slightly. I used a repro spark rod and original control arm on the steering column. Maybe the gas rod was drilled off slightly. The spark control rod seems to be OK. Anyway I need to get the control rod on the two ball ends so the gas lever works. I am wondering if one of the throttle arms or the small steering arm could be bent or I need to shorten the gas control rod. I don't want to mess with the steering column as it was a bear to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are using a 2 tooth column, loosen the bolts that clamp the tube at the box and rotate the tube till the rod is correct.

Unfortunately the steering column is a 7 tooth so the column can't be rotated. Wish it could be.

Rusty,

90% of all accelerator linkage arms are bent. Just bend that arm on the linkage till it lines up and you are set.

Used to be a sleeve with set screws available that you could use to shorten these rods. I don't know if they are still available. Maybe somebody does know, and where.

Spark Rod Sleeve

Cut about 1/4" out of your spark rod that runs from the steering column to the distributor and install this sleeve. Locks with two allen set screws. Allows you to set the extremes of your spark...

This is snyders part for that. Good Luck

Rusty, I just ran into this on Dad's 29 Tudor. The only fix I could think of was to re-drill the hole in the bottom of the gas rod. The re-pop gas rods seem to be mis-drilled. I checked with the one on the 28 Special and found the 1/4" difference.
I removed the split pin, lever end, and spring, and the slipped the lever back on with the short rod in the proper position with the gas lever index to the top of the quadrant. I made a punch mark in the rod through the pin hole, then drilled a new hole through the rod. (the rod was quite soft, surprisingly) Re-installed everything and it actually worked. Before, Daddio had to pull the lever to about 3/4's of the quadrant to to engage the throttle lever at all. Now its about two clicks down. I figured this would be a good "safety" and he's happy enough now. The beauty is you cannot see the repair once the lever is back on the rod. It didn't take more than a couple degrees off for the drilling of the rod to screw things up, and make the short rod too long.
Good luck!

I ran into the same problem years ago. I found a threaded sleeve, cut a sction out of the control rod and threaded each end. When installed I can adjust it and lock it place with stop nuts so that it is the correct length, and before the pedal is to the floor, the throttle plate is full open. The only problem is it irritates the purists.

I was not aware of the Snyder adjustable sleeve. Looks like the way to go since there is no telling how many times the throttle linkage has been bent out of shape.

Tom: I think he's talking about the one at the steering column.

As Brentwood Bob suggests, you might try "forming" the end of the throttle contol rod. Or try another rod.
The sleeve that is sold is for the rod to the dist, not that it couldn't be used for the gas.
