shoebox starting issues

Replace your stock pump, and change your oil, and your problem will be solved. The black exhaust stains are from condensation of moisture. Its perfectly normal to see this on startup, and it will burn off after warmup if you drive for a while. These old cars need to be run good and hot for awhile to get all that moisture that has condensed burned off. Use the choke for as short a period as possible, and that will help also.
 
Thanks Russ/40, I was picking up on that problem within this thread. I think I'll start sourcing one this week..I got caught once with vapour lock a couple of years ago, didn't like that much!

When you drain the oil (and whatever :)) let us know what you find. If there is gas in the oil see if you can tell how much. And remember, if it is gas it is just as dangerous as an open gas container!
 
You can delete the post if you really want to, in Advance it in the upper box.

Cheers JSeery, thanks for all the good advise... and the rest of you. I'll let you all know what I find in the oil pan and then I see what I can find as I dig into the problem. I have been contemplating a 6 volt electric fuel pump for some time, maybe it's time to investigate that option as well.
 
While I was poking around the fuel pump today, looking for some numbers, I thought about the whole fuel problem. What if the float was stuck in the carb...... I'm sure the fuel would flow right through as well and cause the engine to flood. The float bowl on the pump is full, so I am sure getting fuel! I think I may pul the fuel line to the carb and see what kind of fuel pressure I'm getting out of the pump.
Checked my parts supplier from New York, and with the shipping and handling, the currency exchange and the duties, I'm looking at well over $200.00 for a $70.00 pump! Unreal!:mad:

Sorry Ken, I missed this post for some reason. I'm thinking a lot along this line as well. The Carb seems wet and I'm thinking the float is stuck and may need a new needle valve and seat. May get the carburetor rebuilt as this may fix a few problems that I'm having.

Thanks Donald! I wasn't sure what you meant about the plug in the middle of the transmission case, but after crawling around under there this afternoon I saw the plug half way up the right hand side. ( after I pulled the carpet up looking for the hole in the floor!) I guess the ****** is full once the oil starts seeping out of this plug hole while filling through it, right?

Was going to do that today, but started greasing and investigating the transmission, after a late start in the shop. Pulled the dipstick though, and got thinned oil. Wiped it clean and rechecked and it's just gas. I will be pulling the plug tomorrow. I may take a few pic's.

Try Napa Canada. They have come up with most of the parts I've needed for the 52 Mercury so far. Good chance they would have a fuel pump.
 
Know nothing about Canadian exchange rates, what would it cost you to send it to someone in the U.S to have it rebuilt and shipped back?

Our Canadian dollar is only worth about 77 cents if we are buying South of the border. It really adds up.

But does it save any if you send something like a pump to have it repaired, a service vs a purchase? In that case it's your pump. Might not make any difference, like I said, I have no idea how back and forth across the border goes.
 
The only thing I think would whack us up here would be the difference in the value of the dollar. A $70.00 pump with 45.00 shipping and handling would be $115.00. now that is USD. Convert to CND and your looking at 150.00. Not sure if you'd be charged duty on a repair, hope not.
The repairs would have to be a lot less than $70.00 to make it cheaper than buying new. I'm going to take a local guy I deal with to task and see if he can help me out with parts and service at a more reasonable price.
Who said keeping these old cars on the road would be cheap!

Might PM CharlieNY. He most likely knows the regulations on exchange rates as well being able to rebuild / checkout your fuel pump.

Thanks JSeery. I've been reading a lot of great comments about CharlieNY on this site and have thought that having him do my rebuilds would be well worth the costs.
